Hype Hair, the iconic magazine for Black women’s hair and beauty news, is now officially Black-owned. Married To Medicine Los Angeles star Lia Dias acquired the magazine this past week.

“Words can not express the excitement and anticipation I have for this new venture!” wrote Dias in an Instagram post. “Hype Hair has been a staple in the Black community celebrating the uniqueness of Black hair for almost 30 years. I look forward to curating new stories, features, and relationships.”

Dias is also the founder of The Cave Girl LA beauty supply chain which has six local stores in Los Angeles, so this acquisition seems like it will be a perfect fit.

While Hype Hair has been Black women-led since its founding in 1992, it has only been Black-owned one other time in its history, from 2013 -2017, when it was led by UPTOWN Ventures Group.

Black ownership of Black-centric products is always a win. After previously working as the brand’s digital media director and online editor (2013-2020), I am thrilled for the news and to see where Dias takes the brand.

I hear some new and exciting collaborations are now in the works to rejuvenate the brand and reposition itself in the world of Black beauty. We’ll all be watching!
