Yes, y’all, we are still having conversations about the fact that not all hairstylists know how to style textured hair. Of course, that leaves primarily women of color out in the cold when we’re trying to get a fire look for our kinks and curls.
TRESemmé is the latest hair brand to join the texture conversation with their new program in partnership with SimpleeBEAUTIFUL CurlyTextured Academy. The new Texture Certification Program is designed to educate more than 1,000 licensed hairstylists in the art of caring, cutting, and styling textured hair by the end of 2022. In addition, any new hairstylists who work with TRESemmé at events such as New York Fashion Week and Project Runway will be required to take the course.

This is a much-needed resource for hairstylists who are not being taught or experiencing how to style hair textures in the cosmetology classroom. According to TRESemmé’s recent Hair Bias Report, 65% of licensed hairstylists wish they had more training on textured and coily hair (a number that jumps to 70% among white stylists). In fact, Louisiana is the only state in the U.S. that requires textured hair training in order to obtain a cosmetology license.
The certification program taps into the expertise of SimpleeBEAUTIFUL founder and textured hair educator Diane Da Costa and her Teach Texture Academy, with additional input by celebrity stylists and TRESemmé ambassadors Lacy Redway and Nai’vasha.
“I am extremely passionate about textured hair care and have dedicated my career to educating stylists and consumers on how to truly care for textured hair types,” said Costa, who also serves as lead instructor for the program. “Partnering with TRESemmé not only brings awareness to this industry-wide issue of hair discrimination but will introduce this much-needed skillset to more stylists nationwide.”
The three-part training includes a live Texture Fundamentals webinar focusing on textured hair basics, including terminology and best practices for tools and products. This class is required in order to register for the other two course. Those two courses, “Perfecting The Textured Cut” and “The Art Of Textured Styling” will be hosted as in-pereson, hands-on trainings in New York City in mid-June.

Hairstylists who complete all three courses will be added to TRESemmé’s online directory of certified textured hairstylists to increase their client network and visibility.
