Hairstylist Keya Neal has just launched a new initiative to provide Black hairstylists with free education to learn how to style all hair textures.
The color expert and founder of the Texture Vs Race movement has teamed with Professional Beauty Association to host the daylong event with virtual classes led by some of the industry’s top artists including Naeema LaFond and Sam Villa. Class topics include cutting, coloring, styling.
Keya has spearheaded the event as a way for industry allies to support her movement of bringing equity to beauty education. For every registration purchased by non-POC hairstylists, one free registration will be gifted to a BIPOC hairstylist. In addition, proceeds will be donated to the Until Freedom justice organization and Catrice Jackson’s The Harriet’s Dream Healing Retreat for Black women.

“We must educate the Black community at the same rate that we are educating the White community,” she said in a recent social media post. “If the advantaged group gains more of an advantage, and the disadvantaged do not have the same or greater opportunity (equity), then we will subsequently cause a financial challenge to the already disadvantaged and marginalized group of people.”
The class takes place August 31. To apply for a scholarship, click here. To pay for a ticket, click here.
