Makeup brand Black Opal is now officially Black owned. The 25-year-old company which makes products specifically for women of color is now helmed by women of color.
Former White House Social Secretary Desiree Rogers and marketing guru Cheryl Mayberry McKissack purchased the cosmetic brand back in September.
“We are delighted to own Black Opal, a company created almost three decades ago, to address the makeup needs for people of color,” said Rogers, the company’s new CEO. “Rooted in its exceptional product quality and unparalleled knowledge of skincare for highly melanated skin, Black Opal is known for its superior ingredients and high product efficacy. Together, Cheryl and I are looking forward to creating even more innovative products and continuing to grow the brand globally.”

The late Nikos Mouyiaris, owner Mana Products, founded Black Opal 25 years ago. He cited his Jamaican wife Carol Jackson Mouyiaris as inspiration for the makeup line.
WWD reports that Rogers and McKissack will focus on creating talc-free products and skincare products that address issues specific to melanated hues, including hyperpigmentation and brightness.
“Our goal [is] to stay true to the founders’ passion,” said McKissack, who serves as president. “As we continue to grow the company and bring high-quality products to the market, we also plan to focus on creating a positive impact in our communities.”
