7 Modern-Day Black Inventors Who Are Making Hair History

Get to know these innovators who are changing the beauty landscape.

We love to celebrate the innovations of past generations. A quick search on our site alone will lead you down a rabbit hole of black-and-white graphics of our ancestors who changed how we access beauty and hair. But, let’s not forget that hair history is happening every day.

More than 100 years after one of the first Black-patented hair inventions, Black men and women are still changing the beauty landscape with new products and inventions. In the past 10 years, several have even gone viral for being the first to hold multiple hair patents, create time-saving hair brushes and weaving tools, and even protect our ears from hot combs. (Whew!)

And, we are here for it. Especially since they are not only solving core issues for our hair needs, but allowing dollars to cycle just a little bit longer in Black hands. According to a 2022 McKinsey report, “[a]ddressing racial inequity in the beauty industry is a $2.6 billion opportunity” — not for just Black hair equity, but across the entire industry.
