If you don’t already know by now, Angela Basset is a whole mood — on and off the red carpet. Not only has she just made history as the highest-paid actress of color for her role on 9-1-1, she continues to serve body and hair goals. Our latest beauty obsession comes from her Emmy’s look on Sunday (Sept. 19) night.

The actress served body in a black Greta Constantine gown accented with a gathered and ruffled deep pink accent styled by Jennifer Austin and smokey shimmery face beat by D’Andre Michael. She completed her look with one of her signature mane moves: a free-flowing kinky power ponytail crafted by her hairstylist Randy Stodghill.

Stodghill told us the glam squad’s theme for her look was “allure,” while sharing a step-by-step tutorial on the classic ‘do. “Strong and glamorous,” he added.

The mane man prepped her hair with PHYTO Thermoperfect ($39) for heat protection and applied PHYTO Volumizing Blow-Dry Spray ($30) from the roots to the ends of the hair while damp, “for maximum volume.” He then brushed it back into a low pony using a round Olivia Garden brush ($23) and one-inch curling iron “to straighten around the hairline and top half of the head for a sleeker look at the root,” he shared.

To finish off, Stodghill sprayed on PHYTO Curl Legend and Phytolaque Soil to help with curl definition and added hydration. His pro tip for creating a more polished look is going back in and strategically curling or wanding the ends of your natural textures for a more polished look.
