Straight-back cornrows and twisted back buns helped serve retro vibes for designer LaQuan Smith‘s F/W 22 show on Monday (Feb. 15). Smith said his presentation was all about old New York. “We wanted to bring back the glamour of the ’70s and ’80s with a new perspective,” added Smith. Think glam-meets-ski lodge with daring cut-outs and sloped profiles, graphic eyes, and, of course, hair to match.
“I wanted the hair to complement the glamour that we know and love from LaQuan Smith,” said Unilever Global stylist Lacy Redway of the slicked-backed ‘dos. “We kept it bold, sleek, and frozen in place, without a single strand out of place.”

Redway, who is behind the manes of such celebs like Serena Williams, Tessa Thompson, Yara Shahidi, and Simone Biles, also shared how she created the ski-ready knotted buns.
To slick and secure the buns, her styling team was armed with a few must-haves from TRESemmé. The One Step Smooth was first applied from roots to ends to help add moisture to the hair. Before brushing hair back, the TRES TWO Mega Control Gel was applied from the edges throughout the hair to click and smooth down hair and then secured with a hair tie.
She then split the ponytail in half, wrapping the hair around the base of the buns, and then secured with hairpins.
And, of course, the secret to setting the buns was old-school salon styling strips. While not listed in the how-tos, we saw a good number of the models’ laid edges set with them and sprayed down with TRES TWO Freeze Hold Hair Spray.

Once twisted and set, each model’s hair was then smoothed down with Keratin Smooth Shine Serum to achieve the wet, icy effect.
The looks were completed with sloping, bold graphic eyes and a dewy face beat painted by Sheika Daley.
