A new partnership is looking to make it easier for Black hair and makeup artists to get hired on production sets. Black Beauty Roster (BBR) has teamed with WarnerMedia to provide access to its network of 10,000 vetted beauty professionals.

This is major for both the artists behind the chair and the talent they are styling.

For starters, the new partnership will help create job opportunities and remove the red tape for beauty professionals to work on commercial sets and special events. Due to union regulations, beauty pros oftentimes can’t be hired to work on set or get the hours they have worked counted toward becoming union members. It will also make it easier for the hiring teams who say they don’t know how to find these beauty pros.

“We listened to the needs of our talent and the desire of our creative communities for access to beauty professionals who will help them continue to create best-in-class content while delivering a fair and intentional experience,” said Yvette Urbina, WarnerMedia Vice President, Equity + Inclusion, Pipeline and Content, in a recent statement. “We recognize that not everyone is the same and the needs of our talent to perform at their best are paramount.”

By bringing more vetted hair and makeup artists on set, it will also help address issues of hired teams not being able to style textured hair or properly apply makeup to deeper skin tones. These issues have gone viral over the years, with celebs like Gabrielle Union, Yvette Nicole Brown, and Taraji P. Henson sharing how they have been forced to hire their own talent or do their hair and makeup, themselves.

“As we continue to see more diverse talent in front of the camera, we need to make sure that we also diversify behind the camera – especially with hair and makeup,” said Simone Tetteh, BBR co-founder. “We’ve seen and heard too many hair and makeup horror stories on the color talent set and it’s time to change the narrative. We are thrilled that WarnerMedia wants to partner with us to not only diversify the industry, but to lead the charge in changing it for the better.”

Founded by Tetteh and Maude Okra, Black Beauty Roster works to amplify the work of union and non-union Black beauty artists across the U.S. and Canada in television, film and editorial. The BBR Leadership Council is comprised of top industry experts such as celebrity hairstylists Vernon François, Larry Sims and Kim Kimble, celebrity makeup artist Sir John, and model Mamé Adjei.
