A group of Black cowboys is bringing mentorship — and drip — to ranch culture in a new series produced by grooming brand Andis. The Compton Cowboys and their movement to mentor Los Angeles-area youth through horseback riding and animal husbandry are the first features in Andis’ Creator Series highlighting inspirational stories.

The visuals are stunning. We see Black men bucking stereotypes at their Richland Farms while personifying their motto that the “streets raised us. the horses saved us.” There, they are helping connect youth with nature and teach them how to care for horses, the land, and, ultimately, themselves. They are also bringing visibility to the rich legacy of African Americans in equine and western culture.
“We’re changing the trajectory of our community just by having the ranch,” said Randy Savvy, Compton Cowboys Co-Founder. He is joined by collective members, including Anthony Harris aka Ant Dogg, program supervisor Kee, and Brandon the Barber.
“The fact that we embrace our ‘Compton-ness’ in our cowboy way, it inspires the city and inspires the youth and the community members to be like, “Man, I’m proud to be from Compton.”
They are also a whole vibe, showing how grooming is part and parcel of their movement for both themselves and their horses. In one scene we see Brandon the Barber lining up the guys on the farm — and everyone grooming their own horses.
“We try to make sure the horses are kind of matching our aesthetics,” said Savvy in the video. “It shows that you care for something other than yourself. [By] being responsible, having discipline, you’re mirroring them and yourself, back and forth in the grooming process of the animal, and you’re taking that into your own house.”
“We are thrilled to highlight Randy Savvy and his crew in our first installment of our Andis Creator Series because they embody everything Andis believes in; family, creativity, community and, of course, a love for grooming,” said Angie Vlasaty Peterson, the company’s Vice President of Marketing. “Through our partnership, we want to demonstrate how creativity and creative expression can make the world a better place and also motivate and inspire others to create their way.”
