Track phenom Allyson Felix may be known for her record-breaking performance on the field, but she also knows how to step it up on the red carpet. The 11-time Olympic medalist was her own style moment the 2022 ESPYS celebrating outstanding achievements in sports.

Felix posed it up in a black Greta Constantine mini dress with long sleeves and a rolling curve of pink ruffles. She completed the look with a brushed-back, twisted-up back-do that gave us serious bun goals. (Yes, all of those descriptors are needed for this elegant AF bun).

And, of course, we needed details. The curved and swooped ‘do “was inspired by the shape and texture of her dress,” shared her hairstylist Alexander Armand. “We wanted to keep the look clean and chic, with a little excitement in the back!”

We also reached out to Armand to get some tips on the best way to create our own bun magic at home. His starting point is to grab a good edge gel, like the KISS Colors & Care Edge Fixer ($4.49) he used on Felix’s hair.

“To take a regular store bun elevated to a red carpet can happen in a matter of minutes,” he said. “The first step is to make sure the front hairline and perimeter of the hairline are sleek and tamed.”

Once you’ve got your edges in formation, it’s all about shape and placement.

“The second step is to find the perfect position for your bun,” explained Armand. “The secret to the perfect bun is to create a shape that is flattering from every angle.”

Once you’ve got that up, pin it down. “You have to make sure you have the right amount of pins to secure the bun without it looking too forced.”

Felix hung up her racing cleats after her final race last week at the 2022 World Championships, she is still serving up fancy footwork with her Saysh footwear brand.

She and her brother and business partner Wes Felix recently raised $8 million on a Series A fundraising round for the brand, with Gap, Inc. acquiring an equity stake and Athleta showcasing the line on their site.
