Black women and hair are inextricably linked. Whether we’re talking about identity, self-worth, politics, or, even, its criminalization, all Black women have a hair story that has had a life-defining impact. Cultural critic, image activist, and author Michaela angela Davis is back with a reboot of her “Hair Tales” web series to shed light on these stories.

Now, the docuseries is getting major treatment via a new collaboration with her longtime friend Tracee Ellis Ross. The two have teamed up to expand her original 2016 docuseries with a slate of six episodes featuring Oprah Winfrey, Issa Rae, Chlöe Bailey, Rep. Ayanna Pressley, Marsai Martin, and CHIKA.

In addition to being one of our fave curlfriends with her enviable crop of textured tresses, Ellis Ross has created her own curl love movement with her haircare brand PATTERN Beauty. She will lead in-depth, one-on-one interviews exploring the power and poignancy of their revelatory hair stories and how it has shaped their identities as well as how they are collectively weaved together in the Black women’s experience.

Black hair “holds our history, our hysteria, our passion, our pleasure… shapeshifting and creativity,” said Davis in a previous interview. “This is about Black women’s identity through the lens of our hair.”

“It can feel like it’s just a conversation about hair, but it’s not,” says Ellis Ross in the trailer. “It never is,” responds Winfrey, who executive produced “The Hair Tales” with Davis and Ellis Ross.

The new docuseries premieres on October 22 on both OWN and Hulu networks. Press play below to watch the official trailer.
