Hair icon and activist Isis Brantley‘s short film documenting her journey as a hair and braiding activist has been selected as an official film at the 2022 Black Film Festival Atlanta. Brantley made hair history in 1997 as the only hairstylist to ever be arrested for braiding hair without a license.
The film, “The Untold Isis Brantley Story,” provides an intimate look into Brantley’s hair journey as both an activist and hair educator. Her decades-long fight in the court system not only proved that her constitutional rights had been violated, it also led to Gov. Greg Abbott’s signing of the Texas House Bill 2712. Affectionately known as the “Isis Brantley Bill,” the legislature removed requirements that made it illegal for natural hair braiders to braid without a license. She is now actively promoting the CROWN Act, a national movement to make race-based hair discrimination a federal crime, in Texas.
