Madam C.J. Walker

Madam C.J. Walker (1867-1919)

Born Sarah Breedlove, Madam C.J. Walker is the most well-known Black woman to hold a patent. The hair and beauty pioneer founded Madam C.J. Walker Manufacturing Company where she created hair care products to help her hair grow and launched a national beauty empire with more than 200 schools.

While she did not invent the products herself, her Madam C.J. Walker Manufacturing Company held several patents for inventors who worked with her.
