The hunt for a better brush is centuries old and Ohio-native Lyda Newman is one of the inventors who helped us have cleaner brushes. Newman, who was a hairstylist, received a patent when she was just 14-years-old on November 15, 1898 for her invention.

Her improved hairbrush included evenly spaced rows of synthetic bristles, with open slots for hair junk to be pushed into a recessed compartment, and could be opened from the back to clean out.
