Talk about an old school comeback! The 1960s classic haircare brand Afro Sheen is relaunching this month with a whole new look. The brand was a fave back in the “I’m Black and I’m proud” days when we were trading in hot combs for kinky afros and beginning one of the first natural hair movements in the U.S.
Now, the brand — which made history as part of the first Black-owned hair company to sponsor a commercial for a nationally syndicated television program (on Soul Train!) — is back with nine new natural hair offerings to hydrate, define and gloss up our natural kinks and curls.

“We didn’t just bring back the old products because what we do with our natural hair has evolved,” Kelly Keith, vice-president of marketing for Afro Sheen, told ESSENCE in a recent interview. “We wanted to create products that work for all hair textures— including if you rock a traditional ‘fro to a twist out to braid ups to top buns to whatever style you want to create.”
The relaunch captures the essence of the original line, calling us to celebrate the legacy and pride of our natural kinks and curls. The new packaging features a redesigned logo with the classic afro pic and funky product names like Lush ‘Fro Butter and Slick Back Cream Styler to get our hair goals in order.
Other offerings include Crown Defining Curl Cream, Texture Flexing Foam, Glow Up Shine Spray, Velvet Flow 4-In-1 Leave-In Spray, ‘Fro Out Blow Out Spray, and 3-In-1 Nourishing Oil. Yes, please!
The Afro Sheen collection retails for $8 each and will be available on Amazon.com and at Walgreens, Sally Beauty, and Walmart beginning January 20.
