A new docuseries is launching this month in celebration of the impact Black women have had (and continue to have) on the beauty industry. “The Black Beauty Effect” takes a deep dive into our “evolution, revolution, and disruption” as changemakers, trendsetters, and activists.

Black women are arguably the most influential demographic in the U.S. market. Year after year, research houses like Neilsen report on the effect of our Black girl magic as “leaders, originators and trendsetters.” (Their words, not ours). This has led to ground-breaking change, as well as made disparities in how we are marketed to, supported, and viewed, even more glaring.

The three-part series explores the layers of this magic (and pain) with candid and thought-provoking interviews from a who’s who list of Black beauty heavyweights. Featured voices include Mikki Taylor, Esi Eggleston Bracey, Sam Fine, Julee Wilson, and Sir John. (If you don’t know who all of these people are, start Google-ing now!)

“I love that we get to examine Black beauty in all facets!” said Meagan Good, who also appears in the docuseries. “Especially, because for so long, many of us have been told we don’t reach the standard of beauty when, in actuality, we are the most exotic women on the planet. I’m excited for women to be inspired, powerfully influenced in their beauty inside and out, and, most of all, loved on and reminded they are a force of God and nature.”

Actress Andrea Lewis created and executive produced the project, with a special focus on conversations around hair, makeup and skin.

“When I started working on this project it was very important for me to include the full depth of the beauty industry, from the Black beauty editors, makeup artists, and hair stylists, to the social media influencers and, of course, the Black actors,” said Lewis in a recent press statement. “Having Meagan Good and Amber Riley, two of my peers and actors that I respect and adore, sharing their own stories and admiration for the game changers of Black beauty is the perfect addition to this very important story.”

The first-of-its-kind docuseries was produced in partnership with Comcast and CJ Faison of Face Forward Productions and directed by Kwanza Nicole Gooden. Executive producers include Xfinity exec Keesha Boyd, social media influencer and entrepreneur Jackie Aina, and fashion and beauty editor Kahlana Barfield Brown.

“The Black Beauty Effect” premieres November 25 on the newly launched “Black Experience on Xfinity.”  Xfinity customers can access the Black Experience on channel 1622. Non-Xfinity customers will be able to watch on Comcast’s free streaming service app Xumo.
