4. Respect Your Hair’s Boundaries

Your curls may look big, thick and strong, but appearances can be deceiving.

“Our hair is actually very fragile, even though it looks voluminous and curly,” shared Branch.

Branch is especially cautious about permanent color and bleach.

“When you add any kind of chemical to it, and color is included in the chemical category, we can make a lot of mistakes,” she said.

Respecting your hair’s boundaries means noticing when it is becoming dry, weak or difficult to detangle. It means understanding that wanting a new look does not require ignoring the condition of your curls.

A good curlfriend knows when to experiment and when to say, “We are not doing that today.”
